It is almost the perfect vacation spot but for many a summer holiday really needs to include a stroll on golden sands and a dip in the sea.<\/p>\n<p>You will not find that in Medellin but in this article, I will propose some solutions and alternatives to make sure you get everything you want from your break. That may be taking a short, direct flight to an exotic or popular beach spot or going for some alternative refreshing water fun.<\/p>\n<p>I have lived in Medellin for over 15 years and these are my favorite places to take a swim and cool off in and around the city.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ez-toc-container\" class=\"ez-toc-v2_0_82_2 counter-hierarchy ez-toc-counter ez-toc-grey class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Medellin, known for its warm climate and sunny weather, <b>does not have beaches<\/b>. Although the city&#8217;s main downtown street is named &#8220;la playa&#8221; (the beach), actual beaches with sea and sand are located about a 7-hour drive away from Medellin.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The-Reality-of-Medellins-Geography\"><\/span>The Reality of Medellin&#8217;s Geography<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1367\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1367 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/antioquia.jpg\" alt=\"antioquia\" width=\"750\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/antioquia.jpg 750w, https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/antioquia-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No beach around Medellin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Medellin is set alongside a river and runs up the hills of the Aburra Valley. The surrounding area has rich <strong>green hills<\/strong>, intercepted by rivers and mountains. When you stand in the center of the city everything heads upwards into the hills.<\/p>\n<p>The city is the capital of the Antioquia department of Colombia which does reach out to the coast with beach towns such as <strong>Turbo<\/strong>, <strong>Necocli<\/strong> and <strong>Arboletes<\/strong> close to the Dari\u00e9n Gap and the border with Panama.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Accessible-Beach-Destinations-from-Medellin\"><\/span>Accessible Beach Destinations from Medellin<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bus-routes-to-the-beaches-of-Antioquia\"><\/span>Bus routes to the beaches of Antioquia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The coastal cities of Antioquia are a fairly popular option for locals who are looking to visit the beach on a budget. You can get from Medellin\u2019s Terminal del Norte to <strong>Turbo<\/strong> for around 100,000 (US$25) or <strong>Necocli<\/strong> which is further up the coast.<\/p>\n<p>The beaches are far from the best you will find in Colombia and in my opinion for most people it isn\u2019t worth the very long, uncomfortable trip for a slight saving over a flight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The town of Necocli can also be quite dangerous<\/strong>, with many migrants looking to escape the hardship of Venezuela to walk across the wild and lawless jungles of the Dari\u00e9n Gap up to Panama on their way to the US.<\/p>\n<p>Buses in general can be a good option to travel between major cities but I would avoid this on the unpredictable roads to small towns of Antioquia\u2019s coast.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Direct-Flights-to-Coastal-Cities\"><\/span>Direct Flights to Coastal Cities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>From<strong> Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda C\u00f3rdova International Airport<\/strong> (MDE) you can reach a <strong>dozen national and international beach destinations<\/strong>. The main airport is located around 40 minutes outside of the city through the newly constructed mountain tunnel close to the town of Rionegro.<\/p>\n<p>You can take a taxi, <a href=\"https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/uber-in-colombia\/\">Uber<\/a> or the bus from San Diego mall to the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda C\u00f3rdova has regular daily flights to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cartagena<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Barranquilla<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Santa Marta<\/b> on the Caribbean coast<\/li>\n<li><b>San Andres<\/b>, a beautiful island that is politically part of Colombia but that is situated closer to North than South America.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are also direct flights to international coastal destinations such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Panama City<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Punta Cana<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Lima<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Miami <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Santo Domingo<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can also get flights to the coast from Medellin\u2019s <strong>Olaya Herrera Airport<\/strong> (EOH) which is within the city. The airport is a very brief 10-minute drive from Poblado and is an excellent option which can save up to an hour and US$20 each way on <a href=\"https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/medellin-airport-to-city\/\">airport transfers from the main airport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clicair.co\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Clic Airlines<\/a> operates direct flights around the country including to coastal towns:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Nuqui<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Tulu<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Bahia Solano <\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Cartagena<\/b>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Clic flights often don\u2019t appear on Google searches but I always visit their website first when booking a domestic flight. You save a lot of time and money getting to the airport, check in is very quick and I have always had excellent service.<\/p>\n<p>Flights from the local airport are often a little more expensive but when you factor in the time and cost of traveling to Rionegro, it is usually worth it. It takes 1 hour and 15 minutes from MDE airport with LATAM, Avianca and Wingo offering daily flights.<\/p>\n<p>This is my favorite spot because it is<b> slightly less touristy than Cartagena<\/b>, they have some great boutique hotels and it is the perfect jumping-off spot to visit some of Colombia\u2019s best beaches.<\/p>\n<p>You can spend the day in Parque Tayrona (a nature reserve with beautiful beaches), you can head up into the hills of Minca to swim in waterfalls or take the challenge of hiking to the Lost City (a 3-5 challenging trek to an ancient wonder).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nuqui\"><\/span>Nuqui<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1334\" style=\"width: 740px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/nuqui-beach.jpg\" alt=\"nuqui beach\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/nuqui-beach.jpg 750w, https:\/\/amazinglatam.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/nuqui-beach-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beach in Nuqui<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Nuqui is still a bit of an undiscovered treasure and the best spot for untouched beaches.<\/b> You can take a Clic flight to Nuqui from the city airport for between 200,000 &#8211; 250,000 (US$50-US$65)\u00a0 if you book in advance, with 4 flights per week.<\/p>\n<p>You could also get a flight to the <b>Quibdo<\/b>, the capital of the Choco department, and then take a 30-minute transfer<\/p>\n<p>Nuqui is one of the best beach spots in the country if you want to experience <b>nature and tranquility<\/b>. You can see whales along the coast and relax on the beach between deep jungle and ocean. The small island has a rich, unique and fascinating culture with some of the world\u2019s best beaches.<\/p>\n<p>You can get a flight from Medellin\u2019s MDE airport to San Andres direct daily with LATAM or Avianca. Journey time is just under 2 hours and it costs around US$60 each way if you book in advance.<\/p>\n<p>The island is the largest of an archipelago which in 2000 was named a UNESCO biosphere Reserve. The perfectly<strong> crystal clear ocean<\/strong> is known for shining with <strong>seven shades of blue<\/strong> while there are perfect sandy beaches and coral reefs full of exotic fish.<\/p>\n<p>San Andres has a range of luxury hotels and the culture has a strong mix of Caribbean and Colombian influences. Flights from the city airport are also available with Clic, although they are more expensive.<\/p>\n<p>While Bocagrande, Cartagena\u2019s city beach, isn\u2019t great, there are far superior options in <strong>Baru<\/strong>, a short boat ride away. The repairs and maintenance required is reportedly huge, so for the foreseeable future one of the key attractions at the park will remain closed.<\/p>\n<p>The park is still worth a visit although it is a little rough around the edges. They have a large wave pool, a lazy river, small slides, children&#8217;s play areas and cafes serving food. It is also sent to a beautiful spot surrounded by mountains with weather that is always a little warmer than Medellin.
